Moving house checklist

To keep things organised during your house move, we strongly recommend putting a priority checklist together. It has to be simple and easy to use, it will help you to ensure a smooth house move within the deadlines.

Plan your house move

Inventory – write a list of items you have to move. When you pack your boxes make sure you mark them with which room they are from, ie living room, bedroom, kitchen. It will be easier to manage your unpacking process. If you have any fragile items, mark these boxes accordingly so the removal company can be extra vigilant with these whilst transporting.
Outbuildings and lofts – plan enough packaging and think about how you are going to get rid of the items from the outbuildings and lofts. Usually you do not realise how much is stored in these places. Here at Anderson Transport we offer House Removal Services. We will uplift your unwanted items and dispose of them.
Timings – please be aware of timings, ensure you agree well in advance the time of moving your house. Bear in mind you will need plenty of time to defrost your freezer and un-plumb your washing machine.
Insurance – you can arrange insurance with an external insurance company or removal companies can organise this for you.
Cleaning – if you are legally obliged to return a clean property, you may want to organise a cleaning service once you moved house.

Notify these organisations when moving house:

  • Council
  • TV, Internet, Telephone provider
  • TV licence
  • Energy supplier
  • Mobile phone provider
  • DVLA
  • HMRC
  • Post Office
  • Insurance providers
  • Health – General Practice, dentist, optician
  • Finance – update your bank, building society, investments, pensions and credit card accounts so that statements are sent to your new address, or if you lose any cards, they have your most up to date details.

Essential to remember before your house move

Fridge/Freezer – defrosting your freezer and draining water would require a few hours
Washing Machine – if you are taking your washing machine, it’s best unplumbing it a day before your house move, so you don’t need to worry about this on the actual move day.
Gas/Oven/Fireplace – disconnecting Gas/Oven would require a registered gas engineer. Please be aware, you would require some notice to arrange a gas engineer to come out to your property.

On the day of your house move

  • Take a photo of your gas and electricity meter readings
  • Keep essential folders, contacts, paperwork handy
  • Remember where you keep keys from both properties! Don’t hand them out until you have signed the relevant contracts!
